Prog aus Australien hat meistens einen modernen Approach, will Neues schaffen, legt Wert auf Wiedererkennungswert und Melodie. BEN CRAVEN geht in Sachen Prog aber ganz klassisch vor. Man bekommt meist voluminöse, für alte Proghasen relativ leicht bekömmliche klangliche Wohlfühloasen geboten. Vielfarbige Synthies sind die Basis, die Cravens Musik teilweise in die Symphonic/Bombast-Richtung gehen lassen. Es gibt aber auch reichlich ausschweifende Instrumental-Passagen, bei denen sich die klassische Besetzung nach Herzenslust progressiv austoben darf. Besetzung? Denkste, Herr Craven hat nämlich tatsächlich fast alles selber eingespielt. Nur bei den Vocals greift es bei einem Song in die Trickkiste. Für ‘Spy In The Sky’ konnte er tatsächlich Admiral Kirk aka William Shatner gewinnen, und die Passage mit seinem erzählerischen Sprechgesang ist sicherlich ein Höhepunkt dieses Albums. Ein weiterer ist ‘The Remarkable Man’, wo BEN CRAVEN sein Faible für James-Bond-Themes nachgeht.
Auch am Artwork der Londoner Künstlerin Freya Dean gibt es nichts zu mäkeln, es zeigt unsere Erde als einen schönen, phantasievollen Platz und deutet an, jenseits ihrer Oberfläche noch so einiges zu entdecken ist. Das passt sehr gut zur Musik.
So ist “Last Chance To Hear” ein Gegenpol zum heutigen Trend hin zu Streams, Downloads und billiger Massenmusik. Es ist ein Statement pro dem guten alten Album-Format. Der Prog-Nostalgiker wird hier also gerne zugreifen und “value for money” bekommen. Eine Vinyl-Veröffentlichung gibt es zwar nicht, dafür liegt der CD-Version aber noch eine schöne DVD bei, auf der es ein interessantes “Making Of” zu sehen gibt. Vor allem die Passage, die erläutert, wie Craven zu Shatners Vocals kam und sie das erste Mal hört, zeigt, wie viel Freude und Stolz Herr Craven mit seiner Musik verbindet.
