Welcome to the world of cinematic Ben CRAVEN. I did not know this multi-instrumentalist artist before putting a hand on this album. Upon first listen, the images came spontaneously accompany music, both instrumental parts than those that make up the voice. “Last Chance to Hear Part 1” seems to plunge us into a thriller of the 60s (black and white) with its jazzy rhythms and atmosphere of smoky bar-show atmosphere that will be resumed later with “The Remarkable Man” . “Critical Mass”, a play in two parts, takes us first take a ride to the stars with a worthy instrument of the great films of science fiction, and the second part takes us in a more down-to-earth universe with its theme reminiscent of James Bond movies. “Spy in the Sky Part 2” brings me back to my memories of Tangerine Dream ’80s, and could stretch longer than its 4:43. However, this play well prepared the table for “Spy in the Sky Part 3” on which there is none other than William SHATNER micro (we like, or we do not like). If this play aroused in me some trepidation, after the first listen we feel that the character SHATNER is in place to support this catchy tune. And besides, the guitar, bass and keyboards also take a supporting role in this sequence having the chance to come to speak in turns solo. Ironically, “Spy in The Sky Part 1” arrives in late album after the 2nd and 3rd parties and tone of this instrumental ballad leaves to believe in an epilogue to an introduction. Among other colorful characters on the album, the evil “Dr. Komodo” like something out of a cartoon film as “Roger Rabbit” with its “progabilly” style.
“Last Chance to Hear Part 2” reflects the concept of the album. It begins full of good intentions and melancholy, as a farewell to the old way of music distribution, and then suddenly the melody becomes jerky and chaotic, taking us into the vortex of new technologies and the abundance of broadcast platforms . Même le concept de payer pour obtenir la musique ou celui d’acheter un album complet devient un phénomène rare et étrange…
Bienvenue dans le monde cinématique de Ben CRAVEN. Je ne connaissais pas cet artiste multi-instrumentiste avant de mettre la main sur cet album. Dès la première écoute, les images sont venues spontanément accompagner la musique, tant dans les pièces instrumentales que celles qui font place à la voix. « Last Chance to Hear Part 1 » semble nous plonger dans un film policier des années ’60 (en noir et blanc) avec ses rythmes jazzés et son ambiance de bar-spectacle enfumé, ambiance qui sera reprise plus tard avec « The Remarkable Man ». « Critical Mass », une pièce en deux parties, nous emmène dans un premier temps faire une balade dans les étoiles avec une instrumentation digne des grands films de science-fiction, et la deuxième partie nous ramène dans un univers plus terre-à-terre avec sa thématique rappelant les films de James Bond. « Spy in The Sky Part 2 » me replonge dans mes souvenirs de Tangerine Dream des années ’80, et aurait pu s’étirer plus longtemps que ses 4:43. Néanmoins, cette pièce prépare bien la table pour « Spy in The Sky Part 3 » sur laquelle figure nul autre que William SHATNER au micro (on aime, ou on n’aime pas). Si cette pièce suscitait en moi une certaine appréhension, après la première écoute on sent que le personnage de SHATNER est bien à sa place pour accompagner cette mélodie accrocheuse. Et d’ailleurs, la guitare, la basse et les claviers tiennent également un rôle de soutien dans cette séquence en ayant la chance de venir s’exprimer chacun à leur tour en solo. Ironiquement, « Spy in The Sky Part 1 » arrive en fin d’album, après les 2e et 3e parties, et le ton de cette ballade instrumentale laisse plus croire à un épilogue qu’à une introduction. Entre autres personnages pittoresques sur l’album, le maléfique « Dr. Komodo », semble sortir d’un film d’animation tel « Roger Rabbit » avec son style « progabilly ».
« Last Chance to Hear Part 2 » reflète bien le concept de l’album. Elle débute pleine de bonnes intentions et de mélancolie, comme un adieu à l’ancien mode de diffusion musicale, puis subitement la mélodie devient plus saccadée et chaotique, nous emportant dans le tourbillon des nouvelles technologies et l’abondance des plates-formes de diffusion. CRAVEN nous ramène ensuite dans un blues bien rythmé avant de nous plonger dans un troublant silence de 45 secondes. L’album se conclut cependant sur une note d’espoir et de réconciliation avec la très paisible « Mortal Remains ». L’artiste a-t-il enfin pu naviguer la tempête technologique et retrouver la paix avec son art et sa passion?
En somme, grâce à son mélange de styles et la composition très imagée des pièces, « Last Chance to Hear » s’inscrit parmi les parutions intéressantes de 2016. Et si je me fie aux multiples talents de Ben CRAVEN, nous aurons certainement d’autres chances de l’entendre.
